Singapore FIRE — Key Considerations
CPF is not liquid: CPF OA/SA cannot be used before 55. Even after 55, only excess above FRS can be withdrawn. This calculator keeps CPF separate from your FIRE number.
CPF LIFE reduces your number: Monthly payouts from age 65 mean your portfolio needs to fund fewer years at full expense — especially valuable for retiring at 50–55.
SRS at 62: SRS withdrawals are taxed at 50% of the amount — plan drawdowns to stay in low brackets.
4% rule is US-centric: Consider 3–3.5% SWR for a Singapore equity-heavy portfolio with lower historical returns than S&P 500.
How the FIRE Calculation Works
| Step | Formula | Example (S$5K/mo expenses) |
|---|---|---|
| Annual expenses | Monthly × 12 | S$60,000/yr |
| Less CPF LIFE | − monthly payout × 12 | − S$16,800 (S$1,400/mo) |
| Net annual drawdown | Expenses − CPF LIFE | S$43,200/yr |
| FIRE number | Net drawdown ÷ SWR | S$43,200 ÷ 4% = S$1,080,000 |
| Years to FIRE | Solve: PV × (1+r)^n + PMT × [(1+r)^n−1]/r ≥ target | Depends on savings rate |
