Singapore FIRE — Key Considerations

CPF is not liquid: CPF OA/SA cannot be used before 55. Even after 55, only excess above FRS can be withdrawn. This calculator keeps CPF separate from your FIRE number.

CPF LIFE reduces your number: Monthly payouts from age 65 mean your portfolio needs to fund fewer years at full expense — especially valuable for retiring at 50–55.

SRS at 62: SRS withdrawals are taxed at 50% of the amount — plan drawdowns to stay in low brackets.

4% rule is US-centric: Consider 3–3.5% SWR for a Singapore equity-heavy portfolio with lower historical returns than S&P 500.

How the FIRE Calculation Works

StepFormulaExample (S$5K/mo expenses)
Annual expensesMonthly × 12S$60,000/yr
Less CPF LIFE− monthly payout × 12− S$16,800 (S$1,400/mo)
Net annual drawdownExpenses − CPF LIFES$43,200/yr
FIRE numberNet drawdown ÷ SWRS$43,200 ÷ 4% = S$1,080,000
Years to FIRESolve: PV × (1+r)^n + PMT × [(1+r)^n−1]/r ≥ targetDepends on savings rate
Important: CPF OA/SA balances are not counted toward your FIRE number. They are locked assets — only accessible at 55 (excess above FRS) and 65 (CPF LIFE payouts). Including CPF in your FIRE number is a common mistake that leads to under-saving.
