IPPT Scoring System Explained
The Individual Physical Proficiency Test (IPPT) is the SAF's annual fitness assessment for all NSmen. It tests three physical stations with age-adjusted scoring tables — younger NSmen face higher standards, while servicemen aged 40 and above have more lenient requirements.
| Score | Award | Incentive | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| 85–100 | Gold | S$500 | Pass |
| 75–84 | Silver | S$300 | Pass |
| 61–74 | Pass with Incentive | S$200 | Pass |
| 51–60 | Pass | — | Pass |
| Below 51 | Fail | — | Remedial Training |
The 2.4km run contributes up to 50 points — half your total score. Improving your run timing has the biggest impact on your award tier. Training to shave 30 seconds off your run can be the difference between a Pass and a Silver, or Silver and Gold.
Tips to Improve Your IPPT Score
Focus on the run first. With 50 points available, a 1-minute improvement in your 2.4km time yields far more points than equivalent gains in push-ups or sit-ups. Most NSmen can gain 5–8 run points with 8–12 weeks of consistent interval training.
Train specificity. Practice push-ups and sit-ups at IPPT pace — continuous reps without pausing. Many NSmen can do high rep counts slowly but fatigue quickly at test speed. Include sets of 20–30 continuous reps during training.
Book early. IPPT slots fill up fast, especially in Q4 as cycles end. Book your session at least 4–6 weeks out and treat it like a goal race — taper training 3–4 days before for peak performance.
